Tutorial On Ages problems With Tricks

1.The present age of father is five times the age of the son. Five years ago, the age of father was ten times the age of his son at that time. How old is father at present?

1) 45 years
2) 40 years
3) 48 years
4) 49 years
5) None of these

Solution :

Son age = x
Father   = 5x
5 years ago
Son age = x -5
Father age = 5x-5
According to problem

Father age = 10 son ( 5 years ago)
5x -5 = 10(x-5)
---> x = 9

Present father age = 5x = 5*9=45 years

2.Father's age is 25 years more than the son’s age. Four years hence, father’s age will become 1 year less than thrice the son's age. What is father's present age?

1) 31 years
2) 38 years
3) 34 years
4) 36 years
5) None of these

Solution :

Present age of son = x
present age of father = x + 25
4 years hence
  age of son = x+4
   age of father = x+25+4
According to problem
Father's age = 3(son's age ) -1
  x+25+4 = 3(x+4)-1
--> x = 9
Present father's age = x+25 = 9+25 = 34 years

3.The ratio of the age of father and son at present is 5: 1. After 5 years, the sum of their ages is 46. What is the age of father at present?

1) 35 years
2) 25 years
3) 40 years
4) 30 Years
5) None of these

Solution :

Ratio between father and son = 5:1
From that father's age = 5x
        Son's age = x

After 5 years sum of ages = 46
---->  (5x+5)+(x+5)  =  46
-----> x = 6
Present age of father = 5x = 5*6 = 30 years

4.The difference in the present ages of Jhadhav and Vinay is 24 years and the ratio of their ages is 3: 7. What is the sum of their present ages?

1)48
2)60
3) 66
4) Cannot be determined
5) None of these

Solution :

   Difference between ages = 24
Ratio between ages = 3:7
So jahdav age = 3x
    vinay age    = 7x
Difference --  7x -3x = 24
----->   4x = 24
----->   x   = 6
Sum of ages = 7x+3x = 10x = 10*6 = 60

5.Ranjan’s and Anurag's ages are in the ratio 4: 5. Four years hence, their age ratio will become 5: 6. What is Anurag's present age?

1) 20 years
2) 16 years
3) 24 years
4) Data insufficient
5) None of these

Solution :

Ratio between ages = 4:5 ( 5-4=1-- eq1)
After 5 years ratio between ages = 5 : 6  (6-5=1 -- eq 2 )
Ratios    (4:5)*1( eq 2) = 4:5

              (5:6)*1(eq 1)  = 5:6
Rajan's age change after 4 years
    5x - 4x  = 4 years
----> x = 4
Present age of anurag = 5x = 5*4= 20 years

6.The present ages of Amit and his father are in the ratio of 2:5 respectively. Four years hence the ratio of their ages will become 5:11 respectively. What was the father’s age 5 years ago?

1)40 years
2) 45 years
3) 30 years
4) 35 year
5) None of these

Solution :

Ratio between ages = 2:5 (5-2=3---eq 1)
After 4 years ratio = 5:11 (11-5= 6 --- eq 2)
new ratios ( note : consider these new ratios and forgot previous ratios )
Ratio between Amit and his father = (2:5)*6  ( 6 is from eq 2 ) = 12:30
After 4 years ratio become = (5:11)*3 (3 is from eq 1) = 15:33
Change in amits ages After 4 years
15x - 12x = 4
---> x = 4/3
Present age of father = 30x = 30*(4/3) = 40 years
5 years ago fathers ages = 40-5 = 35 years

7.After 5 years the average age of a daughter and her mother will become 29.5 year. If today the ratio of their ages is 2: 5. What is the present age of daughter?

1) Cannot be determined
2) 25
3) 21
4) 14
5) None of above

Solution :
present ages Ratio = 2:5

After 5 years Average age = 29.5
((2x+5)+(5x+5))/2 = 29.5
---> x = 7
Present age of daughter = 2x = 2*7 = 14 years

8.The average age of the boys and the girls in class is 10. The ratio between the numbers of boys to that of girls is 3: 2. What is the average age of only the boys?

1) 18 years
2) 15 years
3) 14 years
4) Data inadequate
5) None of

Solution : Data Inadequate
